How to Play the Saxaflute: Beginner Lessons & Tuning Tips

Welcome to the official Saxaflute learning hub. Whether you have just purchased a Natural Bamboo model or a premium Tam Vong Iron Bamboo instrument, mastering a pocket sax is an incredibly rewarding musical journey. Follow Johnny's expert guidelines below to get a rich, smoky woodwind tone right away.

1. Mastering the Mouthpiece & Embouchure

Unlike standard folk flutes, the Saxaflute utilizes a real saxophone mouthpiece configuration and standard alto saxophone reeds. To create a sound, place your top teeth firmly on the top of the mouthpiece block, and wrap your lower lip slightly over your bottom teeth to act as a cushion against the reed. Take a deep breath from your diaphragm and blow a steady, controlled stream of air across the chamber. Avoid biting down too hard, which can choke the vibration of the reed.

2. Playing in Precise Concert Pitch

Every genuine Saxaflute is mathematically hand-tuned by Johnny to play in absolute concert pitch (available in Key of C, G-Tenor, and A-Alto scales). This gives you a massive advantage, allowing you to instantly play along with backing tracks, pianos, guitars, and other live musicians right out of the box. To keep your instrument perfectly in tune, make sure your alto reed is completely flat against the mouthpiece rails and tightly secured with your ligature.

3. Useful Fingering Charts & Video Clips

Because the Saxaflute features a custom-drilled acoustic body, the fingering is highly intuitive and fun to learn. Our instructional video clips walk you through the entire scale structure from basic root notes to advanced jazzy overtones. Watch our detailed multi-instrument demonstration video layout on the Saxaflute Homepage to hear the distinct tonal characteristics of each model in action.
